If you or a loved one have had troublesome reflux symptoms for many years, schedule your consultation with Dr. Sam Hsieh.

Coulee Medical Center’s general surgeon, Dr. Sam Hsieh, specializes in diagnosing, developing individual treatment plans, and performing surgical procedures for those with chronic GERD symptoms.

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition caused by changes in the gastroesophageal valve (GEV) that allows acid to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus.

GERD can have a significant impact on a patient’s quality of life through persistent typical and atypical symptoms, inconsistent sleep patterns, dietary restrictions, additional health care costs and lost productivity from work. *

GERD can lead to short-term bothersome symptoms, which can vary from mild or moderate to severe depending on the person.

Typical symptoms include: burning sensation in the chest (heartburn), regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux), food sensitivity, and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).

Wondering if your acid reflux is more than just heartburn?

Take this self-assessment to see if you may be suffering from GERD.

What is the TIF Procedure?

TIF, or transoral incisionless fundoplication, is a procedure that treats symptomatic GERD by reconstructing the anti-reflux barrier to restore the body’s natural protection against reflux without incisions.

By restoring the natural shape, location and effectiveness of the esophageal valve, the TIF procedure addresses the root cause of reflux.

Bad Valve

First, the esophagus is lengthened.

Then, the top of the stomach is gently folded and partially wrapped around the lower esophagus.

The wrap is held in place with fasteners made of bioabsorbable material physicians have used inside the body for decades. No cutting is needed.
